I like the way you think, Atsushi. Maybe we can even put a tracking device on her too if we did that.

[ Inaba hums a little, contemplatively as she mulls it over in her head. ]

Do you think it's possible that someone could have told him?

Maybe? But at least in my version of the world, only two people know about it. And before that, only one person knew. I doubt Dazai-san would just go around telling people about it.

If he didn't tell someone about it, then go with the simple possibility: someone found out about it through other means and then he was told about it.

[Welp. That's certainly possible.

And, since anyone who has seen this series would know about the book...]

...he told us not to breathe a word of it to anyone, not even each other. That the world was only safe as long as nobody knew it existed.

I think I understand that feeling, to a lesser extent.

[ Inaba finds herself curling in on herself a little bit, pulling her legs close to her chest, even as she watches the episode. Even so, she's only half paying attention now, Atsushi's voice drowning out the sounds of the television. ]

If you told someone that sort of thing. . . other people might be in trouble, right?

Mhmm. From what I was told, there's rules to what can and cannot be written, but if you know what you're doing then you can rewrite reality to whatever you like.

I...if not for Dazai-san's ability- [Which he won't explain, since Inaba would have seen it in the anime.] -then I would have thought that he used the book to make the world I live in. He was attached to 'Oda', and I could see him changing the world to one where 'Oda' lived.

I see. But that begs the question: if there's two parallel worlds in play here: the one that you're from, and this one that we're watching. . . was your world changed to this one? Or are they just simply separate? [ Are we speculating about canon in a thread? Yeah, probably. ]

Maybe...both? I mean, Dazai-san isn't affected by abilities. If the book is an ability, then he wouldn't be affected by the changes, would he? He did know that there was 'only one world' where Oda-san lived and wrote his book.

Hmm.

If the book is an ability then that just adds more questions. The first being "whose ability", if there is a "who", and the second would be. "What were the changes made" that caused this to happen to begin with?

If it's an ability, there has to be a 'who'. But you're right, I don't know who it could be. It must be someone in Yokohama, or else Dazai-san wouldn't have stayed there. I bet it's someone Dazai-san knows too.

Mmm...I wish at least one copy of Dazai-san would end up in this world. His input here would be useful.

Actually, if we're going with that line of thinking, I might be able to narrow the people down a bit more.

[ And that's when she opens her laptop back up, and although she has the BEAST novel synopsis up, she's more or less skimming it for names. ]

People can be unaware of their abilities, right? And what they entirely do? If we're going at this like a mystery novel, it might be someone we've already seen and not a new character entirely.

Like...Ranpo?

[He never met Ranpo in his world, but he saw the guy in the anime. And apparently he doesn't have an ability? But that seems odd, for him to be the only one without an ability in the whole agency.]

Yeah. But I don't think he's the one we're looking for here. Unless they somehow throw us a curveball.

But why did Dazai tell you about the Book to begin with?

[There's that hesitation again, and he's looking away.]

I think passing on its importance, and why even its existence needed to be protected, was his last attachment to the world. He...I think he truly meant to die, that day. And that's why he told us. That way someone would be in Yokohama to protect the book, even after he died.

[ And to be honest, it's pretty messed up if you ask her.

Regardless of whether he wanted to die, or even if Dazai had thought that he was meant to die in that world... she can't help but get angry, just a little bit. Her hand instinctively curls into a fist for a moment by her side before she unclenches it.

It is, but I'm alright with shouldering it. Plus it's not so much of a secret anymore, if anyone who watches this show can know about it.

You're really strong if you can shoulder something like that. I'd probably crumble if I had to do something like that. . . Honestly, my problems seem so small in comparison.

Any problem can seem big to the person who has it. Though telling you about this makes my problem feel smaller.
